Piercing FAQ

ID POLICY

For over 16's, please have some photo ID to hand should you be lucky enough to look young as we reserve the right to ask to see it at your appointment. We accept passport, driving license, citizen card or college ID with a photo.

For under 16's we need some form of identification for both the minor and the parent. Passport or birth certificate will suffice for the minor (or other document as agreed showing the name of the minor) and passport or driving license will be ok for the consenting parent. Please note that we only pierce minors in the presence of a parent or legal guardian. No exceptions will be made to this rule.

If your surnames differ then we will need something showing the link between the adult and the minor such as a birth certificate.

Please take the time to familiarize yourself with our frequently asked questions below and if you are accompanying a minor also take note of the section on our FAQ section of our website under 'Do you pierce younger children'

Should you have any questions at all prior to your appointment please just let us know

Do you pierce young children?

Yes, we do. Children must be 5 years old.

There are a few rules that we ask parents to abide by when they bring their children in for piercings though; so please bear this in mind prior to booking your children in for an appointment:

 • We understand that you are making the appointment for your child to be pierced, and we will require you to sign the consent forms prior to the treatment. However after this, the child will become our client, and as such;

 • We will address and talk directly to the child, we do not want to be rude, but they are our client and we will make sure that they are happy and that they are aware of what is going on and what is going to happen.

 • We will ensure that the child is aware that although you, the parent, has signed a consent form, that this consent can be withdrawn at any time by them, at any point throughout the appointment. We do this to promote the idea of consent and body autonomy.

 • If the child decides that they do not want the piercing then this is ok with us, if they decide after the first piercing they do not want the second piercing, then this is ok with us too.

 • We actively discourage the child being told that they will look silly, or that there is any level of disappointment because as adults we would not allow anyone to force us to do things that we were uncomfortable with.

 • If your child decides that they are not ready to be pierced, whether that is the first piercing or any subsequent piercings then we will praise them for their bravery. We want them to understand that it takes courage to decide that they are not ready for what is a really big decision for a child.

 • While we understand that this may be inconvenient to some parents we do this to ensure the client does not have a negative or scary experience.

What are your age requirements?

If you are under 16, you will need parental consent to get a piercing with us; you will need to bring ID for both the minor and the consenting adult - if the surnames do not match then we will need to see a Birth Certificate. If you bring a parent with you, they must be present throughout the whole appointment.

This not only satisfies our insurance company but also negates any safeguarding issues and makes sure that minors do not bring other peoples parents to consent on their behalf (as if they would :-) )

If you are over 16, you will need to bring ID with you - again, we reserve the right to ask for it, and to refuse service without it.

ID must be physical hard copies, and not photocopies, or digital images. We currently accept, College ID (with date of birth printed on it), Drivers License, Passport, Citizen Card, or any other ID card issued under the National Proof of Age Standards Scheme.

We do have a few age restricted piercings:

 • 13+ Piercings in addition to lobes other than those listed below

 • 16 - Tongues

 • 18 - Nipples (Male or Female)

Do you use piercings guns?

No, we are a 'needle only' studio. We do not pierce with guns, hand pressure systems, or any other system for that matter.

All our needles are single use, pre-packaged, sterile needles that are only used once - we do not use a needle more than once, even on the same client, ever...!

What aftercare do you recommend?

We strongly recommend Sterile Saline in a pressurised can. We stock Steripierce Aftercare which is available to purchase at your appointment for an additional cost of £5.

If you decide not to purchase aftercare from us then you are able to purchase sterile 'wound wash' from a pharmacy or online.

We DO NOT recommend the use of any chemical cleaning solutions.

Our recommendation is that if you would not put it in your eyes, then do not put it on a fresh piercing.

While you will be given a comprehensive aftercare sheet following your appointment, we also recommend that during healing you completely dry ears front and back before going to bed, as well as completely dry hair when sleeping. Excessive moisture behind the ear or excessive cleaning accounts for the majority of troubleshooting issues during healing.

Why is downsizing jewellery important?

Downsizing refers to switching jewellery, once initial swelling has subsided. Due to the way piercings heal, most require initial jewellery with a noticeable amount of extra room to allow the tissue to swell in the early phases of healing. This is crucial to avoid jewellery embedding in the skin. However, once the initial swelling subsides the jewellery used to pierce will now be too long. Jewellery that is too long can snag easily and move around excessively, leading to irritation and renewed swelling. In oral piercings, excessively long jewellery can lead to damage to teeth, gums, and other oral structures.

At this stage, it’s important to return to your piercer to have shorter jewellery installed to reduce these issues.

If this window for downsizing is missed for piercings such as the helix, the excessive length may lead to migration or a change of angle of piercing, especially if the piercing gets slept on. This damage is irreversible and jewellery may need to be removed.

What is causing my piercing to migrate or reject?

Two rather distinctive piercing complications are migration (the piercing moves from its initial placement, then settles and heals in a new location) and rejection (the jewellery is expelled completely from the body). The piercing is likely to migrate when unsuitable or insufficient tissue is pierced, or if your jewellery is too small in diameter, thin in gauge, or of poor quality.

Migration and rejection can also result from using a harsh aftercare product, following poor health habits, or experiencing excessive physical trauma or emotional stress during the healing period. And, unfortunately, sometimes even when everything is done properly, a piercing will migrate or reject for no known reason. This is simply a risk of placing a foreign object through your skin: it may not stay in the desired position.

I HAVE A LUMP, BUMP, FUNNY DISCHARGE. CAN YOU TAKE A LOOK FOR ME?

Of course, drop us a message, or get in touch and we will do our best to help you. Even if we didnt do the initial piercing.

Piercing bumps are the most common affliction for piercings both new as well as established piercings. We usually work through a checklist for piercing bumps:

 • Is the angle of the piercing correct?

 • If we have done the piercing for you, then we would like to think that the angle is correct

 • What jewellery is in the piercing?

 • If its titanium then great, if you have changed your jewellery, we would recommend changing it back to something titanium - if you need something then please let us know and we can help.

 • Have you knocked it or caught it?

 • Trauma can cause bumps on piercings. They usually go away by themselves following the trauma, but if they do not then further investigation may be required.

 • What are you cleaning it with?

 • The answer should be sterile saline, or sterile wound wash. If it is not, please consider changing your cleaning product.

 • Is there anything else that can help?

 • There are a few other things that may be able to help or that we can try, but we'd only do that if all our other steps have not yielded a positive result.

Do I need an appointment?

Usually, we recommend having an appointment to avoid disappointment or a wasted trip if we are not able to carry out your piercing.
